Giethoorn is a small village north-east of Amsterdam in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Explore ‘Dutch Venice’ by boat! Giethoorn is called “the Dutch Venice” and there is no exaggeration in that! The town has over 150 bridges and is located in Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Giethoorn is at the centre of Overijssel’s canal system, there were no roads until a cycling path was eventually added! Today, boating is a very popular activity among the visitors. As such, we offer a boating tour with accessible ships in Giethoorn.
This boat company is the only existing in Giethoorn where you really can enjoy a canal cruise if you’re using a wheelchair. Besides sailing with a guide, it is also possible to rent a boat and sail for yourself through the canals of Giethoorn. The duration of the canal cruise with skipper is approximately one hour where you will discover Giethoorn from the water: through the narrow canals and under a few of the 176 wooden bridges. You don’t have to worry about the Dutch weather: the boats are heated and covered when it’s raining or cold outside!

The canal cruise has several vessels with a lift on board. This lift allows people using a wheelchair to access the canal cruise boats. Both the pier and the boat are on the same level to make it even more convenient for you to step in the boat. The width of the path between the seats on the boat is also wide enough for wheelchairs. Boarding and disembarking is accompanied by 2 employees: 1 in the boat and 1 who operates the lift from the shore. There is plenty of space for multiple wheelchairs on the boat, but unfortunately not for (foldable) mobility scooters. Although mobility scooters are allowed, the boat company friendly requests to leave them (secured) at the shore.
